For me, Wendigo was a figure whose appearance I really liked when I came across her drawings, which I encountered in some games and which I enjoyed seeing. In fact, Wendigos are monsters that have a very deep narrative. This narrative has some very functional, cultural foundations. Naturally, they have been the subject of many books and movies. Thus, many different stories were added to the cultural narrative.

I read a few books and articles and watched movies in order to write a good article for you about crocheting a wendigo. Being loaded with so much information, I felt at least somewhat competent to write about them. But something happened that I didn’t expect. As Wendy started to appear, a question arose in my mind: If Wendy wanted to get to know me, would it be enough for her to read a biology book and a couple of novels? Of course not. We think a bit stereotypically when it comes to monsters. It’s as if we think of them as beings that will all react in the same way in the same circumstances. I think this is a matter of how we evaluate non-human beings. But anyone who has been in contact with animals knows that different individuals of the same species do not react in the same way under the same conditions. Moreover, it is not necessary to spend a long time with them to understand how unique each one is. But human beings! We fit even the beings we create with our limitless imagination into templates and confine them to borders. Is it our nature to be shallow-minded?
This train of thought brought me to a point I have been thinking about crochet. Anyone who produces handmade products knows that the same person using the same materials and the same techniques in the same order achieves a unique result every time. Each one is one of a kind. For this reason, I believe that as crocheters we have a broader horizon, a more comprehensive understanding and a higher empathy. It is a joy to see how producing anything can benefit you in so many different ways. I would like to thank Wendigo Wendy for making me think of such a topic. Of course, there is one more person to thank, the designer of this pattern, Mrs. Cuddlington.
All of CuddlingtonStudio’s patterns are so cute. I bought the Woe The Wendigo pattern, which I loved the moment I first saw it. I found the pattern very simple and well crafted. Photos and descriptions are sufficient. It’s a very easy pattern to follow.
Materials I used:
Beige: YarnArt Jeans Number 03
Black: YarnArt Jeans Number 58
Brown: Alize Cotton Gold Number 688
Tulip 2.20 mm crochet hook
The difficulty level of the pattern is beginner. You just need to know simple techniques. But there are no lessons on the basic techniques you will use in the pattern. I really like that the techniques are taught in the patterns, but I cannot consider the fact that it is not included as a deficiency.
With the yarn and crochet hook I used, my Wendigo ended up being 13 cm (5 inches) tall, including the horns. It has an adorable look. I especially liked the shape of its face and body, and I’ve decided to make other versions with different arms and legs.
The sewing phase isn’t difficult at all. After positioning the head with pins, you shouldn’t have any problems sewing it. Using black yarn might be a bit tiring for the eyes while crocheting, but during the sewing stage, it hides mistakes much better, which is convenient. The embroidery details on its eyes and horns add a lovely touch to its face. It’s also very easy to make, and well explained.
The pattern is super cute; I really like it as a decorative piece, and I think it would make a great toy as well. It would be a perfect gift for those interested in supernatural beings.
Wendigos have some powers such as entering people’s minds and dreams. Maybe these thoughts of mine are always Wendy’s work, who knows? I hope you will give a chance to this pattern that I enjoyed crocheting very much. I would love to read your experiences with the pattern and crocheting in the comments. If after reading this article you feel the need to crochet a wendigo, don’t worry. I hope this is because I introduced the pattern well. This is completely normal, I also have an irresistible need to crochet a wendigo. My Wendy is very well-behaved, she won’t use her powers on you. At least that’s what she told me. I sincerely believe her.
With love.
