I really wanted this blog post to be deeper, more literary, and in a darker tone. However, I can not say that I succeed. This article certainly does not do justice to the lore, art design, wonderful music, and unique characters of the video game Hollow Knight. We can say that Hollow Knight, whose art design fascinated me from the first moment I saw it, contains the styles that correspond to the word “cute” for me. In this blog post, I review two patterns designed by Monsterhook for the two most important characters of the video game. The Knight ( not Hollow Knight) and Hornet.
Hollow Knight takes place in a kingdom called Hollownest. There is a deep lore that tells about the founding of this kingdom, the insect tribes within it, and the current situation of the insects due to an infection. The Knight, the character we controlled, has all kinds of adventures on a very large game map, each part of which has different music and a unique atmosphere. Moreover, this game is very difficult to play, seriously difficult, that’s why people don’t even start the game, let alone not completing the game. It is a game that should be taken seriously not only with its story but also with its gameplay.
The narrative is quite deep, the characters say things like:
“ Hold something in your mind and it lives on with you, but forget it, and you seal it away forever. That is the only death that matters. “
“Be the person you would like to meet. If our life is but a spark in the eyes of gods, let’s blind them at least once.”
“In the deepest darkness, there are beasts who wear faces stolen from your memories and pluck at the strings in your heart.”

There are thousands of Hollow Knight fans online. They like to share ideas about the game in online forums. They try to figure out what the signs on the boards mean, and they argue about points that are not emphasized enough in the story. The game is so important for them. But every time I pick up a pen, I say, “What a sweet world this is, what a cute toy this has become, I want to crochet thousands of them and fill my house with them.” (There are hundreds of The Knights in the game, but only the character we play can escape the abyss. One of the saddest stories 🙁 ) I regretfully condemn the game’s studio, Team Cherry, for creating such a cute world and making me feel like a shallow person, only interested in appearance. Of course, the fact that the game takes place in an insect universe adds to its sweetness. They are so tiny and adorable.
However, I also have a few cool sentences. I was going to tell you how similar the game is to life. We, too, are on an adventure whose purpose we do not know, and we embark on this journey to find our way. I was also going to say that the game symbolizes the problems we have overcome in life. Those problems will not disappear from our lives and we have to deal with the same problems over and over again. Moving to a new chapter may scare us, sometimes we may feel stuck in dark corridors where we do not want to step, but as we go down those paths, we can see how things that were difficult for us become easier. With experience, we can become stronger with the new skills we acquire in life and become able to challenge the enemies we are afraid to pass by. So if you ask what the enemies in the game are like, they are extremeley cute. It is impossible for me to write the article I dreamed of about such a cute game.

First of all – I repeat – this character is mentioned in the pattern as “Hollow Knight”. Unacceptable. This character is the “Knight”. I think it’s the cutest video game character ever. Its toy is also extremely beautiful.
I don’t want to make the slightest negative comment about this pattern. I like how the toy looks so much. After all, the toy I crocheted matches exactly the one in the photo. But adding a few more photos would be better. Maybe it’s not a big deal, but I would like to see photos of how to put pipe cleaner into the horns. Photos would be useful for someone who has never used pipe cleaner when making toys. I used a thicker wire instead of pipe cleaner and the wire was easier to give a shape. Apart from that, there is no photo of the toy taken from behind. Why! The Knight is very cute when you look at it from behind too.
As usual, I used a 2.5 mm Tulip crochet hook. The length of the toy I made was 22cm / 8.66 inches, exactly as stated in the pattern.
I used a thinner yarn for the cape. I didn’t want to switch to another yarn because the color was exactly the tone I wanted. That’s why the cape was a little short/tight. I solved this problem by adding Line 6 and the result was perfect. You can make the cape with snaps or by sewing it on. I’m in favor of snaps. Because the toy’s body is so cute, sometimes you may want to take out the cape.
I chose a bright white yarn because there is a slight glow in the white colors of the toy. I am satisfied. There is an imperceptible difference in the photos, but what can be seen with the naked eye is exactly what I wanted. I am happy with the result.
Sewing the pieces together is very easy in this pattern. I made the eyes as instructed and their expression matches the appearance in the game. Maybe in the future, I will make other Knights and add various expressions to them. There is no Knight’s weapon in the pattern, but I will find a suitable pattern and add it.

As for my comments about Hornet, I’m not overly fond of her character. Maybe I may change my mind after the second game. Hollow Knight Silksong is the sequel that fans have been eagerly and impatiently waiting for. In this game, we will guide Hornet and witness her story closely. In this respect, Hornet is a very good gift. Imagine how popular the second game will be once they release it. This toy is a very up-to-date gift.
Hornet’s toy looks exceptionally adorable. The toy I made is 40 cm/ 15.74 inches including the horns. It’s a huge toy, it’s both cuddly and eye-catching. Monsterhook’s pattern is the best among Hornets. I found the photos sufficient. Monsterhook masterfully photographed the details such as sewing the head to the body and sewing the cape.
I added four more rows to the cape. It was shorter than in the photos because I crochet so tight. I made up for the difference by adding 4 more rows. If you want the cape to come off, you can use snaps. I like the sewn version better.
When making the horns, I recommend that you crochet very tightly, especially the last few rows and the joining phase of the two horns. Otherwise, the horns look separated from each other. I think this is the most crucial detail to pay attention to in this pattern. Please pay attention to this detail before you remove the yarn, so you won’t have any problems while making the toy.
The second thing to consider is sewing the head to the body. Even though the cape will cover the flaws in this part when sewn, it is useful to be careful. When the eyes are made to the size given, Hornet’s expression becomes very good. They also add a weapon to the pattern and I love this. With her beautiful red cape, weapon, and sharp gaze, Hornet will look great on any bookshelf.
I can’t think of a better gifts for someone who is involved in the gaming world or someone you want to meet this world. If you know someone with tastes like mine, – someone who will melt when they see such a toy rather than a cute kitty – you can be sure that there is absolutely no better gift for them.
I will try every Hollow Knight patterns I like on Amigurumi Street. I started with my favorites. I thank Monsterhook for these beautiful patterns.
